The Problem – When Families Become Nurses, Everyone Suffers
For so many families, the journey into caregiving begins with love—and quickly turns into exhaustion. It is a family quietly battling an invisible struggle. It doesn’t show up in lab results or on insurance forms. It’s the tear-streaked face of a daughter administering meds at 3 a.m. because the nurse couldn’t come. It’s the son who leaves work early—again—to catheterize his father because no one else can. It’s the daughters/sons who are now the schedulers. It’s spouses who are now caregivers. It’s the grandmother who feels like a burden because her family has become her care team.
The home, once a sanctuary, becomes a mini hospital. It’s exhausting. It’s overwhelming. And most painfully—it’s isolating. Families are desperate for help, but they’re afraid: afraid to lose control, afraid of impersonal care, afraid no one will love their person the way they do.
Health systems are overwhelmed. County case managers are juggling caseloads that would break most of us. Discharges are happening faster, but the support at home hasn’t caught up. Gaps appear. Clients fall. Readmissions climb. Families burn out. Everyone loses. County case managers watch this cycle repeat every day.
Dr. Charles Manakpalah and Emmanuel Miantona, RN knew these stories very well. They had seen it every day in health facilities, on home visits, during calls from overwhelmed families. And they knew: something had to change.
The Desire to Change – “There’s Got to Be a Better Way”
These were the same silent cries with a consistent theme: “We need help—but we want to stay a family.”
These cries turned into the mission that founded BetterHealth LLC to provide the solutions to two questions:
